It’s a classic poem. We’ve all heard it. We can probably recite it. But how can you not love it?? And with such beautifully illustrated versions available, you’ll want to make it part of your Christmas library. Of course, it’ll be hard to narrow it down to just one. Every year I’m tempted by a new one.
(All of these are versions of the Clement C. Moore poem. There are lots of spin-offs, but you just can’t beat the classic!)
1. The Night Before Christmas by Holly Hobbie
This is the version tempting me this year. I adore Holly Hobbie’s illustrations. So much detail! And I love how she manages to capture such emotion. Oh, I want it. (I shouldn’t get it…but I want it…) [Spoiler alert: I got it.]
2. The Night Before Christmas by Gyo Fujikawa
Growing up we had one or two of Fujikawa’s board books, so whenever I see her art I’m immediately transported to my childhood. Her style evokes so much nostalgia, and that’s what you want at Christmas, right?
3. The Night Before Christmas by Eric Puybaret
Puybaret has a very clean, modern style. I love the festive color palette. Plus, this version comes with a CD by Peter, Paul, and Mary!
4. The Night Before Christmas by Christian Birmingham
If you like traditional, it doesn’t get much more traditional than this version. Originally printed in the 90s, it has seen various reprints over the years. And you can understand why. Isn’t this how you’ve always pictured Santa?
5. The Night Before Christmas by Niroot Puttapipat
This version is my absolute favorite. The detail is sparse, so the photos don’t really do it justice. There are only five colors: white, black, gold, red, and green and cut out portions lend visual interest as well. Something about this seems so festive to me. And the kids are captivated by the pop-up at the end:

Favorite Illustrators Jan Brett, Mary Engelbreit, and Robert Sabuda all have versions of the Night Before Christmas as well. You couldn’t go wrong with any of them!
