Read Across America and Dr. Seuss Day

NEA’s Read Across America Day is an annual national reading celebration on March 2, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Do you celebrate it at your school or at home?

It seems that there are a million great ideas out there for celebrating Read Across America Day with Dr. Seuss, so here is a round up of some of our favorite ideas.

  • Check out the 2011 NEA's Read Across America idea booklet. One of my favorite activity ideas is the "Seuss Spa." Using The Foot Book and The Tooth Book, teach about how it's important to take care of our bodies.
  • Make a class book about all the places one can read.
  • Match the State activity (idea from here): Create a clothesline or Bulletin Board with all of the Fifty States in ABC Order.  Find a book that students LOVE to correspond with the beginning letter of each state.   Read it and hang a child created book review with the corresponding state.  For Example, California-Cat in the Hat; Iowa-If You Give a Mouse a Cookie; Virginia-Very Hungry Caterpilliar.
  • Silly Words: using some of Dr. Seuss's unique words as examples, students make up their own creative words and definitions (idea from here.)
  • Recommend a book: students share their favorite book and why they think others should read it.
  • There are, of course, lots of printable activities like coloring pages and word searches. These are great but hopefully if you celebrate it will involve lots of reading and activities first.
  • Check out this link to find out if there is a Read Across America event going on near you. If you live near a Micheal's store, they are having an event that day.
  • Do a Dr. Seuss author study. I love all of the ideas found here.
  • Obseussed is a cute blog full of Dr. Seuss themed ideas.
