Help your students have a jitter-free (and glitter-free) back to school with our First Day Wish poem and student gift! This resource includes several variations of our original poem to help you give a small token of connection to your students before the school year starts (or on the first day!)

As teachers, we want to calm the jitters and help our students settle into their new class as quickly as possible. We want them to see that we’re on their side, that we love them, and that we’re cheering them on. Reaching out to students before school even starts is a powerful way to start that connection process.

Here’s what you’ll get in this first day student gift resource:

  • full page, full color illustrated poem
  • postcard sized poem
  • pencil shaped tags and poems
  • gift bag toppers
  • long envelope sized illustration and poem
  • editable “do not open until ___” tags
  • Teacher’s Guide

Ways to use this resource:

✅ Give to students before school at open house or meet the teacher

✅ Mail poem postcard to students before school starts (easiest)

✅ Mail envelope sized poem to students with a glow-in-the-dark star

✅ Give students a small cellophane or sandwich bag at open house/ meet the teacher with a star shaped stress ball and the poem

On the first day or at open house/meet the teacher, give students a “mystery gift” paper lunch sack with a card that says “do not open until tonight!” (editable)

Start by gathering a star for each of your students. If you’ll see your students before the first day (at an Open House or Meet-the-Teacher Night), you may want to use a squishy, anxiety relief star. If you won’t see your students in person, a glow-in-the-dark wall star is easy to mail.

Set the star and the poem on each desk and remind students to take them home. After the Open House, you can see which students attended and which students you might need to reach out to by checking which desks still have their stars.

❤️ Your students will love this unique and meaningful moment of connection with you before school begins!  They’re sure to love their little star and making a wish for the new school year.

❤️ You’ll love your students’ reaction to this simple gift. It’s a great way to show your students how much you already care about them.

❤️ And parents will appreciate the simple token gift that doesn’t create a mess. This is a wonderful alternative to jitter glitter or ready confetti.

All you need to do to prepare this gift is to print out the poem size you want to use and grab a glow in the dark star or squishy star (if you want!) Then you’ll be ready to go for meet the teacher, open house, or the first day of school!
