Let’s go!

[00:00:53] Emily: Merry Christmas!

[00:00:55] Heidi: You did it. And Christmas is over.

[00:00:58] Emily: Our grandmother [00:01:00] always used to say that there’s nothing more over than Christmas, and that is a real feeling on December 25th.

[00:01:05] Heidi: Yeah, no joke.

[00:01:07] Emily: And while it might not have been picture perfect

Yeah, because when has anything ever been picture perfect?

[00:01:15] Heidi: But you did manage to pull it off with all of the love and the care that you have to give. The gifts were opened, the cookies were eaten, and the photos were taken.

[00:01:24] Emily: Even if one kid had their eyes closed in every single one, I have one. It’s every time.

[00:01:31] Heidi: It’s always that same kid, but you made it. And now here you are in the sweet, quiet space after the holiday. And we want to remind you of something important. You deserve to rest.

[00:01:45] Emily: Though you might be feeling that itch to dive into cleaning up or planning for what’s next, just hold on. Pause for a little bit and let life settle.

[00:01:56] Heidi: The week after Christmas has its own magic, but you might miss it if [00:02:00] you’re too busy trying to catch up. Look at the proof of joy around you. The tree is still standing, even though it may be a little lopsided now. The scraps of wrapping paper are reminders of the eagerly unwrapped gifts, and the fridge is full of leftovers from a meal that you shared with your favorite people. Most of your favorite people.

These are beautiful mementos of the wonderful holiday you created.

[00:02:25] Emily: So now is your time to breathe and savor the quiet magic of the in-between. This week isn’t about getting back to normal. It’s about soaking in the slower pace. The rush is behind you and there’s no rule that says you have to jump straight into productivity mode.

The presence can stay scattered a little longer. The decorations don’t have to come down today. And guess what? Leftovers totally count as cooking.

[00:02:50] Heidi: And because we love a handy tip, here are some holiday Head Start tips that will not help you get ahead, but they will help you lean into the pause. [00:03:00]

[00:03:01] Emily: First, be intentional with your energy. Your battery is likely low from the marathon that is December. Spend your energy where it matters most, on the things that fill your cup. That might mean snuggling under a blanket, reading a book you’ve been meaning to start, or playing board games with your kids.

[00:03:20] Heidi: Our second tip is to set good enough goals. For the next couple of weeks, some tasks deserve to take a leave of absence. The kitchen doesn’t have to sparkle. The laundry doesn’t need to get folded right this second. Focus on just one or two things each day and let the rest wait. You are not falling behind. You’re giving yourself space.

[00:03:40] Emily: Third, find moments of joy. Maybe it’s sipping your favorite tea by the fire, savoring the last slice of pie, or watching your kids rediscover their gifts from Christmas morning. Look for the tiny, wonderful moments that are easy to miss in the hustle.

[00:03:57] Heidi: And after a few days, lean into [00:04:00] routine, but go slowly. This in between week is the perfect time to ease back into rhythms that work for your family. Do it gently, there’s no rush. Think of it like settling into a cozy chair instead of diving into a cold pool.

[00:04:13] Emily: Oh, yeah. And the big one, give yourself credit. You have been holding all the things together and now it’s time to let go a little. Slowing down isn’t lazy. It’s how you refill your tank. Life will speed back up soon enough.

The emails, the school schedules, the to dos, they’ll come knocking, but right now they can wait. This is your permission slip to embrace the slow. When you rest, you’re modeling something powerful for your family. It’s okay to pause, to savor, and to take care of yourself.

[00:04:45] Heidi: Now, of course, there is a page for this in the Holiday Head Start playbook. One of the last pages in the Traditions and Activities section, I think it’s the second to the last page, is for your after Christmas plans. Now, hold up. The idea is not to make this week [00:05:00] productive. is to make this week fulfilling.

[00:05:03] Emily: If what you need is to just let the week happen as it happens, then that’s great.

Lean into it. But if you’re looking for some guidance, use this page to sketch a few ideas of how you might use this time to connect, relax, and gently step into the new year.

[00:05:18] Heidi: This slower pace isn’t a break. It’s a gift. It’s the reset your soul is craving after all of the months of hustle and bustle. So take it, sink into it, and let it fill you up.

The world will keep spinning and you’ll be ready for it tomorrow. Today though, just breathe in the quiet You have earned it.
