1st Grade Cumulative Around the Room Math Review

Mathreviewblue

It’s that time of year!  Happy test-prep teachers everywhere!!  Yeah, nobody’s favorite time, right?  So we have a little something to help you out.  No, it’s not caffeine.  It’s something better (well, if not better at least more colorful!).

It’s the 1st Grade Cumulative Around the Room Math Review!  (say that 3 times fast!)

Last year I shared with you a little about how I help my kids prepare for the end-of-year CRT.  I post questions around the room and the kids wander about answering them.  Here’s one of my former 2nd graders deep in thought:

Around the room test
(This little guy is in 4th grade now!!)

After they have answered all the questions, we go through them one by one and check their answers.  It gives me a good feel for how solid they are on 2nd grade math concepts and which ones might need some reinforcement.

This new version is geared toward first grade math (first grade language arts is already available).  Just like with 2nd grade, you can post questions around the room and let your little firsties get some up and moving time as they walk from question to question.  There are 30 questions that cover all of the 1st grade Common Core math standards at least once and sometimes twice.

Students each have a record sheet for answering.  The biggest trick is making sure they understand that the solution for question 12 must be written in box 12.  It sounds simple, but if you don’t point it out, you know half of them will be writing the answer in the first box regardless of question number!

Sheet

When everyone has completed the task (it helps to have a fast finisher activity for any speed demons), display the PowerPoint (if you don’t have a projector, you can just hold up the question cards).  This step is very important, so you may have to do it the next day in order to give it the time it needs.  Go through the questions one-by-one.  Show the question and have some discussion about possible answers and solution strategies.  Then show the answer slide and have students compare.  I let students keep their record sheets during this step. It’s helpful to the learning process if they can see their mistakes and have a chance to correct them.

The PowerPoint answer slides, of course, show the correct answer.  Where it’s feasible, they also show a possible strategy for finding the answer.  Students may have used the example strategy or used a different one.  Either way it’s a great opportunity for working some math talk into your classroom.

After correcting (or the next day if they’re getting restless), I have them work independently on a skill sheet.  This way I can see each student’s individual work.  The questions styles are similar to the ones in the around-the-room questions.  There are 16 problems, but I score it out of 20 (questions 11 and 16 are worth 2 points because they have 2-part questions). An answer key is also included.

You can pick up your own around-the-room activity in our Teachers Pay Teachers store.  I’m not in a first grade classroom, but I was thinking about how useful this would be to use in the fall with my new 2nd graders.  It would give me good insight into which 1st grade concepts aren’t quite solid yet.

In this pack you get:

  • 60 slide PowerPoint with 30 question and 30 answer slides
