It was a great leap of faith to stock this bin with birdseed. There have been mishaps and, therefore, there's been plenty of opportunity for sweeping practice! But after a week of play, they're much more intentional in their actions. And that, I suppose is the larger goal with a sensory bin, right?
They've really been enjoying this new sensory experience. The favorite activity is using the funnel and the ladel. Someone plugs the end of the funnel and the rest of them take turns filling it. Then the funnel is opened and everyone is impressed with the birdseed pouring out! Simple pleasures!
Filler:
- 10 lb bag of birdseed
- wood craft rounds (from Discount School Supply)
- pine cones (from Jo-Ann's)
- mini pine cones on twigs (from Jo-Ann's)
- dried buckeyes
- mini pumpkins/gourds (from Dollar Tree)
- scarecrows (from Target)
- various scoops, bowls, and funnels (from Target and Dollar Tree)
We read Margaret Wise Brown's book Scarecrow Boy recently, so I thought there would be more interest in the little scarecrow "family."
Nope. Not really. They started out in the bin. Quickly ended up in the box with the scoops/bowls. After a few days they got put back in the bin–so they could be buried in the birdseed. Poor little scarecrows never stood a chance!
